Antique & Vintage Postcards

Bathed in the same rapturous golden-orange twilight that defines Arthur C. Payne's beloved cathedral series, Wells Cathedral rises majestically from a canopy of autumn trees along the road approaching the west front — its ornate central tower and the silhouette of the Bishop's Palace visible against a glowing Somerset sky. Wells, the smallest city in England, has cradled this cathedral since the 12th century; its famous scissor arches and the medieval clock that features jousting knights are treasures of English Gothic architecture. This card was mailed on 25 July 1905 — postmarked at West Kensington — from a correspondent named R.C. Bartmann, who wrote warmly to a Miss Harrison at 51 Cornwall Gardens, South Kensington, thanking her for concert tickets: "Many thanks dear for the ticket, I shall enjoy the music. Love to you all." A charming social snapshot of Edwardian London's cultured middle class at leisure.
