Postcard 1958 Inverness Scotland Multi-View Thistle Dennis Productions Used

Inverness, Scotland, UK1958ChromeFair-Good

Wreathed in a dramatic Art Nouveau thistle — Scotland's prickly national emblem — and inscribed with the affectionate Scots greeting "Thistle remind ye we're no forgettin ye," this charming multi-view card from Inverness gathers five intimate black-and-white vignettes of the Highland capital: the castle brooding above the River Ness, the city seen looking north from the castle ramparts, the Flora MacDonald statue standing proud before the castle façade, the serene Glen Mohr from the castle, and the spired skyline from Ardross Street. Postmarked Inverness, 7:15 PM, 1958 with a 2½d Queen Elizabeth II stamp, the card carries a warmly personal message from a sender who signs herself "Mum, Allan and Ross" — she writes to a woman named E. at 118 Ensbury Park Road, Winton, Bournemouth: "Dear Man, Having a day in Inverness. It has rained several times today but we don't worry about it. Hope you are keeping well. I am spending the week-end with Mum and Allan. Love, Mum, Allan and Ross." A small family holiday, a rainy Scottish weekend, a postcard dashed off with cheerful stoicism — the human warmth of this everyday 1958 message is its own kind of time capsule.
