Postcard 1908 York Minster Exterior Valentine's Series Used Somersetshire

York, England, United Kingdom1908Pre-linenGood

Bathed in the warm amber glow of an Edwardian colorized photograph, the soaring west front of York Minster commands its precinct with eight centuries of Gothic ambition — twin towers, an immense perpendicular window, and a procession of pinnacles that seem to pierce the pale sky above the ancient city of York. Sent in July 1908 from Strensall Camp near York to a Miss F. at the Post Office in Cheddar, Somersetshire, this well-traveled little card carries a breezy, slightly cryptic note: the sender — who signs off warmly but informally — mentions being "in York about an hour" and having "been here return to Borton" (possibly a camp posting), hinting at a soldier or military visitor on weekend leave, a poignant snapshot of Edwardian Britain just six years before the world changed forever.
