Art Nouveau color lithograph postcard illustrating a verse from "Schilfied" (Reed Song) by the Austrian Romantic poet Nikolaus Lenau (1802-1850). In a nocturnal lakeside scene, a luminous white-robed female figure -- hair streaming in the wind -- wades in the moonlit shallows at left, while a dark-caped male figure watches from the reed-fringed bank at right, silhouetted against a bare gnarled tree. The mood is melancholic and otherworldly. A decorative panel at the bottom carries the title "NIKOLAUS LENAU" and a verse from the poem in Gothic script, with Art Nouveau spiral ornaments at either side.
