Clinging impossibly to the sheer ochre walls of Wadi Kelt near Jericho, the Greek Orthodox Monastery of St. George of Koziba looks less built than grown from the living rock — its domed chapel, arcaded galleries, and bell tower stacked in vertiginous tiers above a dry riverbed that tradition identifies with the Brook Cherith where the prophet Elijah was fed by ravens. This aerial chrome-era photograph by I. Amad captures the monastery's full dramatic setting: layers of Judean desert limestone towering above and below, the white-plastered structures vivid against the tawny cliffs. Originally founded in the 5th century CE, destroyed by the Persians in 614, and restored in the 19th century, St. George's remains an active monastery and one of the most photogenic sites in the Holy Land. The card back is annotated "Israel" in pencil by a collector, and the stamp area has been partially torn away, suggesting it was mailed.
