Tokyo Imperial Palace Sakurada Gate Staff HQ Japan Postcard c1908
Tokyo, Japan1908Early Divided BackUnused
Color-tinted photographic postcard of the moat and stone embankment outside Sakurada Gate (桜田門, Sakuradamon) of the Imperial Palace grounds in Tokyo, with the Western-style Imperial Japanese Army General Staff Headquarters building visible at left across the water. Captioned in English: "Headquarter Staff from Sakurada Gate, Tokyo." and in Japanese: 東京桜田門外ヨリ参謀本部望 (View of the Army General Staff Headquarters from outside Sakurada Gate). The Sakurada Gate area housed Japan's military nerve center during the Meiji and early Taisho eras; this was a popular view with foreign visitors and diplomats. The multilingual back (French, German, Italian, English, Russian / Cyrillic) with "Made in Japan" printed vertically is typical of Meiji-era export postcards produced for international sale, circa 1905–1912. Unposted.
