Maastricht Vrijthof Square Netherlands Briefkaart Postcard c1902
Maastricht, Netherlands1902Undivided BackUsed
Early black and white photographic postcard (undivided-back Briefkaart) of the Vrijthof square in Maastricht, Netherlands, dominated by the twin Romanesque towers of the Basilica of Saint Servatius (Sint Servaasbasiliek) and the Gothic tower of Sint Janskerk. An ornate cast-iron bandstand/gazebo and a group of pedestrians animate the foreground. Caption in red: "Maastricht, Vrijthof." An ink signature "Gustave Gabriels" appears on the image side. Published by Uitg. Gez. Niesten, Muntstr. 34, Maastricht (catalog No. 8244). Postmarked Maastricht c.1900–1905. Addressed in elegant French to His Excellency Bishop Henry Gabriels, Bishop of Ogdensburg, N.Y., USA — the Roman Catholic Diocese of Ogdensburg was established 1872; Bishop Henry Gabriels (1838–1921) served from 1892 until his death. The sender, Gustave Gabriels, was likely a family relation of the bishop. An unusual piece of Catholic ecclesiastical postal history.
