Postcard Amsterdam Prinsengracht Canal Netherlands c1900 Dr Trenkler UDB

Amsterdam, Netherlands1902Pre-linenExcellent

Tall-masted barges lie moored along the Prinsengracht as the honey-stone tower of the Westerkerk — where Rembrandt was buried in 1669 — rises above a double canopy of elm trees in this exquisitely hand-tinted early-era card published by the celebrated Leipzig firm of Dr. Trenkler & Co. The canal shimmers in aquamarine tones, pedestrians stroll the tree-lined quay at right, and market stalls crowd the left bank — a quintessential snapshot of Amsterdam's mercantile waterfront life at the turn of the twentieth century. The reverse bears a Dutch-language undivided back reading "Briefkaart / Algemeene Postvereeniging" with address lines in the period style, and is entirely unused, preserving the card in pristine display condition.
