Mexico DF Zocalo Palacio Nacional Cathedral Bell Silhouette RPPC Postcard c1940
Mexico City (D.F.), MexicoRPPCGood
Striking real photo postcard of Mexico City captioned "Dpto. Central Desde Catedral — Mexico, D.F." (Downtown Seen from the Cathedral), no. 214. The composition is exceptionally dramatic: a massive cathedral bell is shown in stark black silhouette in the foreground, filling most of the upper half of the image, while through and below it the Palacio Nacional/Zócalo arcaded façade is visible with period trams and automobiles, and a columned cathedral balustrade in the lower foreground. The juxtaposition of the ancient bell and the bustling modern Zócalo below creates a powerful image. Posted [Mexico City area, c.1935–1945] → Mrs. Linnea [?] Whitney, Hall, Ontario County, New York, U.S.A. Two Mexico 2 centavos green equestrian stamps (Correos Mexico). Densely written message in rapid script, largely illegible.
