The bronze figure of Christ the King stands with arms outstretched atop Cerro del Cubilete — the reputed geographical center of Mexico — in this aerial chrome view of a sanctuary rebuilt in 1944 after government forces destroyed the original during the bloody Cristero War. "¡Viva Cristo Rey!" was the rallying cry of the Cristero martyrs, and this pilgrimage site remains one of Mexico's most significant monuments to that conflict.
