Postcard 1960s Templo San Diego Teatro Juarez Guanajuato Mexico Chrome Unposted

Guanajuato, Mexico1963ChromeExcellent

Two of Guanajuato's most iconic architectural showpieces face each other across a single frame in this vivid chrome-era souvenir card — the ornate Churrigueresque stone portal of the Templo de San Diego erupts in a riot of saints and scrollwork at right, while the neoclassical colonnade of the Teatro Juárez, crowned by bronze Muses, commands the left, with a streetscape of late-1950s American automobiles and pedestrians anchoring the scene in a specific, unrepeatable moment of mid-century Mexican urban life. The Teatro Juárez, inaugurated by President Porfirio Díaz in 1903, was among the most celebrated opera houses in Latin America; the adjacent church dates to the 17th century. This card was sold through the Restaurant y Miscelánea Casa Valadez on the Jardín Unión, itself a Guanajuato institution, and bears a handwritten price of 25 centavos — a pleasing piece of retail history on the back of a card that never made it into a mailbox.
