Postcard 1950s Chrome Teatro Juarez Guanajuato Mexico Muses Statues Facade

Guanajuato, Mexico1958ChromeExcellent

Six bronze muses stand sentinel atop the Doric portico of the Teatro Juárez in this crisp, full-frontal chrome postcard from mid-century Guanajuato — one of the most iconic tourist images ever produced of this colonial Mexican city. The theater's eight fluted columns march across the frame in perfect symmetry, flanked by ornate gas-lamp standards and a pair of crouching stone lions at the base of the grand staircase; at far right the shoulder of the Templo de San Diego peeks into frame, its Churrigueresque stonework a deliberate counterpoint to the Neoclassical order next door. Inaugurated on October 27, 1903, by President Porfirio Díaz, the Teatro Juárez remains the crown jewel of Guanajuato's cityscape and the primary venue of the world-renowned Festival Internacional Cervantino. This view — taken straight-on in bright midday sun against a deep blue sky with cotton clouds — was the postcard image of the theater for a generation of Mexican tourists, distributed through Casa Valadez on the Jardín Unión.
