Antique & Vintage Postcards

Two figures stand atop a stepped granite obelisk on the breezy summit of Killiney Hill, gazing southward across the sweeping arc of Killiney Bay toward the low, rocky outline of Dalkey Island — a view that has been compared to the Bay of Naples and that drew Victorian and Edwardian gentry to build their seaside villas along this storied County Dublin coastline. The hand-coloured lithographic tints lend the gorse-covered hillside a warm golden ochre, the bay a glassy blue-grey, and the distant island a hazy impression of Irish summer light. The stepped pyramid visible at right is the Killiney Obelisk, erected in 1742 as a famine-relief work project — one of Ireland's earliest such monuments and still a popular walking destination today. Published by "The Milton Post Card" series, printed in Germany (a common arrangement for quality Irish and British scenic cards before World War I curtailed German printing contracts after 1914), this unused Divided Back card is blank on the correspondence side, suggesting it was kept as a souvenir rather than mailed.
