Weary hunters trudge home through deep snow while their lean dogs trail behind them — Pieter Bruegel the Elder's 1565 masterpiece Hunters in the Snow (Winter) rendered in rich early chromolithographic halftone on this museum postcard from Vienna's Kunsthistorisches Museum, one of the most reproduced winter scenes in Western art. The composition draws the eye from the silhouetted hunters and bare black trees in the left foreground sweeping diagonally down into a vast snow-blanketed valley, where tiny figures skate on frozen ponds beneath a dramatic alpine horizon. A fire burns at an inn to the left; black birds wheel across a steel-grey sky. This card was published by Kunstverlag Wolfrum of Vienna (Verlagsnummer 221), a respected fine-art postcard house active from the early twentieth century, and the unused condition preserves the deep tonal range of the print particularly well. A handsome example of the classic undivided-style Wolfrum art card format.
