Horse-drawn carriages and an electric tram share the cobblestone square in front of Stockholm's grand Central Station on this lively hand-coloured Edwardian postcard, postmarked March 29, 1919 — a city still powered by the tension between old and new, sent by a traveller named Jasmin to her friend Ida in Germany with warm birthday wishes and plans for Sunday coffee before a steamboat excursion to Vaxholm. The front presents a crisp chromolithographic view of Stockholm Centralstation (opened 1871, rebuilt 1925 — so this card shows the original building), with ladies in dark coats, cabs, and a blue tram filling the foreground square. On the reverse, Jasmin writes in flowing German script to "mein liebe Ida" — "Vielen Dank für deinen l. Brief, ich habe mich sehr gefreut zu hören, ob du deinen Geburtstag or was verleben konntest… Heute ist Sonntag, ich will den Kaffee trinken und nach Vaxholm mit dem Dampfboot fahren, das ist einen tollen Vorort." The stamp is a Swedish 10 öre carmine Gustav V (issued 1911), cancelled with two Stockholm postmarks dated 29.3.19.
