Antique & Vintage Postcards

Twelve smoked herrings hang in a glistening, copper-and-crimson row on a line — their curled mouths and iridescent scales rendered in vivid chromolithographic ink — in this irresistible novelty greetings card from St Andrews, Scotland, playing the well-worn pun "Just a Line From St. Andrews" with the cheerful confidence of a seaside souvenir stall circa 1905. Published by the celebrated Valentine & Sons of Dundee and London, this type of "comic line" postcard was a staple of the Edwardian golden age of postcards, printed by the millions and sold at coastal resorts throughout Britain. St Andrews — already famous as the home of golf and a medieval cathedral — had a thriving fishing industry and tourism trade, and cards like this bridged both worlds with a wink. The card is part of a small accordion-fold booklet of St Andrews views (West Port gate, cathedral ruins, street scenes) that accompanied it, published by the same Valentine & Sons imprint, visible in the reverse/detail images. Card number 1855. Unused and unaddressed.
