Postcard Scotland Kids Bagpipes Drum Clare Cameron Art JB White Dundee

Scotland, UK1940Pre-linenExcellent

Two rosy-cheeked children in full Highland dress — the girl drumming, the boy playing the bagpipes with cherubic enthusiasm — bring an irresistible burst of tartan color to this delightful Scottish greeting card, illustrated by the beloved British artist Clare Cameron. Set against purple heather hills and a loch-blue sky, the scene is framed by a bold plaid border in the Cameron clan colors, and carries the warm verse: "From the land of hills and heather, / Pipes and drums unite together, / Reminding us to send a line, / For friendship's sake, and Auld Lang Syne." Published by J.B. White Ltd. of Dundee — one of Scotland's most respected postcard houses — this unused card is a prime example of mid-twentieth century British greeting postcard art at its most charming. Clare Cameron was a prolific illustrator of children's subjects for J.B. White and other publishers from the 1930s through the 1950s, and her cards enjoy a dedicated collector following today. The back is entirely unused and clean, with no postmark or stamp.
