Postcard 1907 Manchester NH Lake Massabesic Pull-Out Novelty Leighton UDB

Manchester, New Hampshire, USA1907Pre-linenFair-Good

Sailing on a summer afternoon, white-canvas boats and rowboats glide across the glassy Back Pond of Lake Massabesic while figures lounge on the dock — a quintessential New Hampshire leisure scene rendered in the soft hand-tinted color of the Edwardian "golden age" of American postcards. But the real surprise lies within: tucked behind the Lake Massabesic front card is an unfolding strip of Manchester views including the Merrimac Valley panorama from Hooksett Pinnacle, the brick industrial canyon of the mills along the Merrimac River, and the ornate Romanesque-revival Railroad Station with horse-drawn carriages waiting outside. Published by Hugh C. Leighton Co. of Portland, Maine and printed in Germany, this pull-out novelty mailed from Boston on December 10, 1907 carried a 1-cent Franklin stamp to Miss Marion Burnham in Goffstown, New Hampshire — a Christmas greeting in the UDB transition era.
