Antique & Vintage Postcards

A twilight cityscape of Porto glows with the soft amber of electric street lamps in this evocative sepia photographic cover — the massive bulk of what appears to be the Serra do Pilar monastery crowning the hilltop while the city below flickers into nocturnal life, a poetic image of Portugal's second city at mid-century. "Recordação do Porto" — Remembrance of Porto — is hand-lettered in elegant copperplate script, and the accordion leporello concealed within unfolds to reveal a series of gelatin silver photographic views: the spectacular single-arch Ponte de D. Maria Pia spanning the Douro gorge (the 1877 Gustave Eiffel–designed railway viaduct), the broad Avenida dos Aliados (Lado Nascente — east side), the Praça de Gomes Teixeira, and further city monuments. The reverse of the outer envelope carries the city's heraldic crest and the publisher's imprint: R. de Elísio de Melo, 28 — Telef. 2 7181 — Teleg. "Indicador" Porto, identifying the printer as a Porto-based firm operating under the Salazar-era Estado Novo. A pencilled price of "10.00" (escudos) survives in the upper corner. The booklet is unused and retains all its interior views.
