Antique & Vintage Postcards

Two gleaming early automobiles — one red, one green — cruise past the neoclassical marble facade of the Cleveland Museum of Art in Wade Park, captured in a vivid white-border color-lithograph that perfectly frames the optimism of American cultural life in the early 1920s. The museum, opened in 1916 and constructed of Georgia marble, was already being celebrated as "the most beautiful building in the City" — a claim printed right on the card's reverse by publisher Braun Post Card Co. of Cleveland. A sender named "Mae" (or "Mae"— signature reads "Mae") dashes off a reassuring note to a recipient named "Carl" — addressed to "Mrs. Carl Schotton, R.L. #61, N. Clymer, N.Y." — reporting "Arrived home all right. Feeling good. Will write soon. Love to all." The card is postmarked Cleveland, Ohio, October 15, 1921 PM, with a machine slogan cancel reading "Address Your Mail to Street and Number." The 1¢ green Washington stamp is neatly affixed.
