Postcard 1950s Zugspitze Summit Station Bavaria Germany US Army Authorized

Zugspitze, Bavaria, Germany1950Pre-linenGood

Perched impossibly at 2,966 meters above sea level, the Münchener Haus weather station and summit building of the Zugspitze — Germany's highest peak — emerges from a dramatic swirl of snow and cloud in this moody black-and-white photograph, the antenna mast and timber scaffolding silhouetted against an alpine panorama that stretches to infinity. This card was published by the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn A.G. (Bavarian Zugspitz Railway) based in Garmisch and bears their official rubber stamp on the reverse: a circular violet ink seal reading "Bayerische Zugspitzbahn – Gipfelstation 2966m." Critically, the back also carries the notation "Publication Authorized by 6870 DISCC U.S. Army, Authorization Nr. 8529," placing this card firmly in the post-WWII Allied occupation era when American forces and their families were major tourists at the Garmisch recreation area. The price printed on the card is 15 Pfennig, consistent with early 1950s German pricing.
