Postcard Catskill Mountains NY Rip Van Winkle Trail 1920s Linen White Border

Catskill Mountains, New York, USA1922Pre-linenExcellent

A lone touring car — hood long, fenders arched, unmistakably early 1920s — inches around a precipitous curve on the Rip Van Winkle Trail through the Catskill Mountains, the valley dropping away in great folds of blue-green forest to the horizon. This white-border era card, hand-tinted in the soft pastels that made Catskill scenery postcards so collectible, captures the exact moment when automobile tourism was remaking the American landscape: the stone-capped retaining wall beside the road is brand new, and the birch trunks glow almost silver against the autumn warmth of the hillside maples. Published by Chas. W. Hughes of Mechanicville, NY under the American Art / Star Quality imprint, the card was never sent — its back pristine, stamp box noting the two-tier rate of one cent domestic / two cents foreign that places it firmly in the 1919–1925 window.
