Postcard c1905 Lakewood NJ Cathedral Drive Pull-Out Souvenir Mail Card UDB

Lakewood, New Jersey, USA1905Pre-linenGood

Tall cathedral pines line a pristine snow-dusted drive into infinity — Cathedral Drive in Lakewood, New Jersey, one of the Gilded Age's most fashionable winter resorts, where Rockefellers and Goulds wintered alongside society's elite in the piney air of Ocean County. This handsome Art Nouveau-bordered "Souvenir Mail Card" by the Rotograph Co. of New York unfolds to reveal a remarkable concertina strip of Lakewood's storied landmarks: the rustic wooden bridges and gazebo of Lake Carasaljo, The Sunken Gardens at Georgian Court (the lavish Gould estate, now Georgian Court University), the carriage house of Georgian Court, and further resort scenes. The undivided back is unused — the one-cent-postage-all-over-the-world notation dates this squarely to the pre-1907 UDB era. The Art Nouveau embossed kraft-paper sleeve with die-cut thumb-pull is a design gem in its own right.
