Postcard c1905 Buffalo NY McKinley Monument Novelty Pull-Out Multi-View Card

Buffalo, New York, USA1905Pre-linenFair-Good

Souvenir of Buffalo, New York at the dawn of the picture postcard era — this striking novelty pull-out "Multiple View Card" presents the McKinley Monument on the cover, the obelisk-style granite shaft standing snow-dusted against a winter sky with the ornate Victorian city hall visible behind it, a poignant memorial to the assassinated president who had died at the Pan-American Exposition in this very city just a few years before. The word "PULL" at the bottom of the cover is an irresistible instruction: a tab reveals an accordion leporello strip that unfolds to show the Presbyterian Church (with its distinctive square tower), the Milburn Residence (where President McKinley actually died after being shot — a landmark of national significance), Main Street with its grand hotel façade, the Buffalo Botanical Gardens greenhouse complex, and Buffalo Harbor crowded with smoking steamships — a city portrait of remarkable civic ambition. The reverse is a "Printed Matter / Multiple View Card" format with "Souvenir of Buffalo, N.Y." and a note that postage is one cent to all countries; it is unused and unaddressed, with no. 34 pencilled at lower right. The Milburn House connection — where McKinley lay dying and where Theodore Roosevelt was sworn in as President — gives this card exceptional historical resonance beyond its visual appeal.
