Postcard Greece Athens Acropolis Parthenon Chrome TWA In-Flight 1960s

Athens, Greece1965ChromeExcellent

High above the ancient city of Athens, the golden columns of the Parthenon crown the Acropolis plateau in a sweeping chrome-era view that captures the timeless drama of Greece's most iconic hilltop — this postcard was handed to passengers aboard a TWA transatlantic flight, a glamorous souvenir of the jet-age travel that first brought mass tourism to the ancient world. The warm afternoon light bathes the Doric temple in amber, while the massive retaining walls of the sacred rock drop sharply to the lower city, where the arched remains of the Odeon of Herodes Atticus are visible at lower left. In the background, the conical peak of Lycabettus Hill rises behind the complex. Printed lithographically in the USA and distributed by TWA as part of their in-flight destination card program, this unused card exemplifies the mid-century airline's ambition to make its passengers feel like world-travelers even before landing.
