Antique & Vintage Postcards

Haughty and eternal, the bronze King Alfred raises his sword skyward above the Broadway in Winchester, the ancient Saxon capital of England — this early Valentine's Series photographic card captures the 1901 Hamo Thornycroft statue just a few years after its unveiling, the stone plinth still crisp, and in the right background a young newsboy or errand boy in a flat cap stands watching, an unconscious echo of the ordinary medieval lives that Alfred's kingdom once sheltered. Winchester's castle walls loom in the soft distance behind leafy trees, lending the composition a layered depth that rewards close study. Valentine's Series, published from Dundee and London, was among the most prolific and respected British postcard houses of the Edwardian era, and the "British Manufacture" designation on the reverse reflects the nationalist commercial sentiment of the period. The catalogue number 35682 and the circled "JV" (James Valentine) publisher's mark are cleanly printed.
