Postcard 1902 Winchester College Outer Gate England Pre-Linen P&G Wells

Winchester, England1905Pre-linenGood

A medieval gateway frozen in sepia — Winchester College's Outer Gate looms with its pointed Gothic arch, flint-knapped stonework, and a carved niche figure presiding above the entrance, just as it has since William of Wykeham founded the school in 1382. This Edwardian-era card, published by local Winchester firm P. & G. Wells and printed in Saxony at the height of Germany's postcard export dominance, captures the quiet dignity of one of England's oldest and most prestigious public schools. The card was never posted and retains a pencilled dealer price of "3/-" in the upper right corner, a detail that grounds it in the early-twentieth-century ephemera trade. The divided-back format, combined with the "Affix Half Penny Stamp / Printed in Saxony" box, firmly dates production to the 1902–1910 window when Saxony-printed cards flooded British stationers' shelves.
