Postcard 1900-05 Dresden Altmarkt Market Square Germany Ottmar Zieher

Dresden, Saxony, Germany1902Pre-linenGood

Dresden's Altmarkt pulses with pre-war commercial energy in this sweeping Heliocolorkarte — the broad cobbled square packed with market stalls under striped awnings, horse-drawn carriages clustered at the right, and hundreds of tiny pedestrian figures animated in the golden afternoon light, all dominated by the soaring Baroque tower of the Kreuzkirche rising behind a row of merchant facades advertising "Dresdner Bürgerbräu," "W. Matzke," "Gebrüder Eberstein," and the department store "Renner" in bold signage — a vivid snapshot of a city and a way of life that would be almost entirely erased by February 1945. Published by Ottmar Zieher of Munich, one of Germany's most celebrated chromolithographic postcard houses, this unused example bears the bilingual "Postkarte — Carte Postale / Weltpostverein — Union postale universelle" back, typical of Zieher's output c. 1898–1906, and is printed in his signature Heliocolorkarte process, renowned for its luminous colour depth.
