A medieval stone arch bridge — the "Devil's Bridge" — frames a rushing mountain stream in the Harz foothills near Herrnstein, its mossy voussoirs barely holding back the bare winter trees crowding either bank; the whole scene has the brooding atmosphere of a Brothers Grimm illustration made photographic. Published as Official View No. 6 of the Brölthaler Eisenbahn (Bröltal Railway), a narrow-gauge line in the Bergisches Land region of western Germany, this is a rare early railway-issued souvenir postcard — an "Officielle Ansichtskarte" intended to promote tourism along the line. Photographed and distributed by Rud. Stolle of Bad Harzburg (Villa Ilse), the card's printing code "I. 1000. VIII. 00. K." confirms a first print run of 1,000 copies dated August 1900, making this an exceptionally datable early German postcard. Unused and in remarkable condition for its age.
