Postcard 1900s Casino Monte Carlo Monaco Color Unused Kropp Vintage

Monte Carlo, Monaco1910Pre-linenExcellent

Beneath a sky of painted clouds, the ornate Belle Époque façade of the Casino de Monte-Carlo presides over a swirling crowd of Edwardian ladies with parasols and gentlemen in top hats — a scene of leisure so studied in its elegance it almost obscures the fact that every person here came to gamble. This richly hand-colored card captures Monaco's most iconic building at the height of its pre-war glamour, the crowd dense enough that one can almost hear the murmur of a dozen languages mixing in the Mediterranean air. The informative back text notes that Monaco's inhabitants "are entirely free from taxation" and "are not allowed to play at the Casino" — two facts that apparently made the principality work just fine. Published by E.C. Kropp Co., Milwaukee, card number 410-63.
