Postcard 1920s Cairo Sphinx Pyramids Giza Camel Rider Egypt Lehnert Landrock

Giza, Egypt1925Pre-linenExcellent

A lone camel rider in flowing white robes passes before the inscrutable face of the Great Sphinx at Giza, with two pyramids rising monumentally behind in this hand-colored photographic postcard by the celebrated Cairo studio of Lehnert & Landrock — whose luminous tinted views of Egypt set the gold standard for early-twentieth-century Oriental tourism imagery. Rudolf Lehnert and Ernst Landrock established their Cairo studio in 1924, and their numbered series became the most sought-after Egyptian postcards of the interwar period, combining photographic precision with painterly color that gave the ancient monuments an almost theatrical warmth. Card no. 2037 shows the Sphinx from the northeast with the Pyramid of Khafre dominating the right background and the smaller Pyramid of Menkaure visible at center-left, the desert ground bare of the sand that later accumulated around the Sphinx's base — a detail that helps date the original photograph to the 1920s excavation era.
