Postcard 1905 Churches Ottawa Illinois Souvenir Mail Card Folding Pull-Out

Ottawa, Illinois, USA1906Pre-linenGood

Pull the brass-fastener tab and a cascade of miniature church views tumbles out like a paper accordion — one of the cleverest novelty formats of the Edwardian postcard boom: the patented pull-out souvenir folder, here devoted to The Churches of Ottawa, Illinois, patented December 5, 1905 (U.S. Patent No. 806,631). The cover image shows the First Congregational Church, its Gothic Revival sandstone spire needle-sharp against a pale sky; inside fan the First Presbyterian Church, St. Columba's Church, and at least four or five further Ottawa congregations, each rendered in crisp halftone. Published and sold by Kneussl Bros. of Ottawa, Illinois, the card is designated a "Souvenir Mail Card / Printed Matter / One Cent Postage All Over The World" on its undivided address-side reverse — a rate and format that place it squarely in the 1905–1907 window. Ottawa, on the Illinois River at the confluence with the Fox River, was a prosperous small city whose churches reflected its ambition; this little folder is a rare surviving record of its Edwardian ecclesiastical streetscape. Card no. 62460u on front; no. 429 pencilled on reverse.
