Postcard Mexico City Cathedral Catedral RPPC Real Photo 1920s–1930s Yaspe

Mexico City, Mexico1928RPPCGood

Rising in baroque grandeur above the Zócalo, Mexico City's Metropolitan Cathedral fills the frame of this striking real-photo postcard — its twin bell towers piercing a pale sky, stone saints arrayed along the roofline, and the elaborate churrigueresque portal carved in exquisite detail. Construction on this cathedral began in 1573 and continued for nearly 250 years, making it the largest and oldest cathedral in the Americas; the photograph here captures it in the 1920s–1930s, before modern scaffolding and earthquake-stabilization work altered its silhouette. Numbered 812 and bearing the distinctive stylized "Yaspe Fot." credit — a well-documented Mexico City commercial photography studio active in the early 20th century — this RPPC shows fine tonal gradation and sharp architectural detail characteristic of the studio's gelatin silver prints. The back carries only "Tarjeta Postal" with no message or stamp, indicating it was kept as a souvenir.
