Postcard 1900s Budapest St Stephen Basilica Interior Hungary Levelező-Lap

Budapest, Hungary1907Pre-linenFair-Good

A breathtaking black-and-white photographic interior sweeps upward through the vast apse of Budapest's St. Stephen's Basilica — Hungary's largest church — capturing the high altar in all its neo-Renaissance splendor: a towering canopied baldachin, rows of tall candles, marble balustrades, and richly carved relief panels crowding the curved walls beneath a soaring coffered dome, with a triumphant Christ figure silhouetted at the very apex. Construction of the basilica dragged on for over fifty years (1851–1905), and this card was almost certainly produced right around the building's consecration, when postcards of the newly completed interior flooded the Austro-Hungarian market. On the reverse, a hand in old German script has addressed the card to a recipient in Kroisbach bei Graz, Steiermark (Styria, Austria) — a small village outside Graz — sent from Szombathely, western Hungary, with a warm greeting scrawled along the left margin, connecting two points of the vast Habsburg world in a single small card.
