Postcard 1927 Linen Cape Cod Canal Highway Onset MA Kashimura Mailed

Onset (Wareham), Massachusetts, USA1927Pre-linenFair-Good

A hand-tinted early linen-era road scene sweeps the viewer along a curved highway cut dramatically into a sandy hillside above the glittering blue waters of the Cape Cod Canal near Onset, Massachusetts — a vintage automobile visible in the middle distance hints at the thrill of early motoring tourism along this then-newly widened federal waterway. The Cape Cod Canal, originally opened in 1914 and taken over by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1928, was a popular destination and engineering marvel; the service road along its banks drew sightseers from across New England. This card was mailed on August 22, 1927 — just one year before federal takeover — by a sender named Pearl to a Miss C. Flaherty, first addressed to 31 Newbury St., Boston, then forwarded to 79 Myrtle St., Watertown, Massachusetts, suggesting Pearl caught her friend mid-move. The publisher, G. Kashimura of Onset, Mass., was a Japanese-American entrepreneur operating a souvenir shop in a small seaside resort community, a remarkable detail of immigrant enterprise in 1920s New England.
