Postcard 1906 Dalton MA Willows Willowbrook Park Scenic Trees Pond Undivided

Dalton, Massachusetts, USA1906Pre-linenGood

A sun-dappled summer idyll along the brook — willows and maples arch over a glassy pond at Willowbrook in Dalton, Massachusetts, their reflections shimmering in jewel-toned lithographic color that captures the quiet gentility of a small Berkshire mill town's green heart. Dalton, home to the Crane paper mills that produced U.S. currency stock, was a prosperous and tidy community, and Willowbrook Park was its pride; the carefully tended lawn, distant bench, and winding water in this view speak to civic ambition as much as natural beauty. A personal note on the reverse ties the card to real life: Laura wrote to her friend Miriam, apologizing that she could not come to see her that week on account of company, hoping Miriam had made it safely home on Saturday, and cheerfully urging her to "come up again soon." The card traveled from South Deerfield, Massachusetts, to Miriam in Nantucket — addressed care of John — franked with a 1-cent Franklin Green stamp and postmarked December 1906.
