Postcard 1909 UDB Boston MA Dudley St Terminal Station Elevated Rail Trolley

Boston, Massachusetts, USA1909Pre-linenGood

Boston's Dudley Street Terminal thrums with turn-of-the-century electric energy in this rare pre-linen chromolithograph view — elevated tracks curve dramatically left and right while open-platform trolley cars in Boston Elevated Railway livery glide through the station's iron infrastructure, a yellow dispatcher's booth stands sentinel at grade below, and the surrounding Roxbury commercial strip blazes with painted-wall advertisements for Ferdinands furniture, a flour mill, a "Clothing Establishment," and a warehouse company, conjuring the dense commercial vitality of Edwardian Boston. Dudley Street Terminal (today Nubian Square Station) opened in 1901 as the southern hub of the Boston Elevated's Orange and surface lines; this image, printed in Germany and published by Mason Bros. & Co. of Boston, captures the station near its operational peak before the 1987 demolition of the elevated structure. On the back, a writer named Rachel sends a ten-word gem — "We are having a splendid time. Love to all. Rachel." — postmarked Boston Street Station, 10 PM, 1909, with a 1¢ Benjamin Franklin green stamp. The detail crop reveals a destination sign on the front trolley car reading "CANAIL" (Canal Street route).
