Postcard 1906 Essex Street Lawrence MA Street Scene Storefronts UDB Used

Lawrence, Massachusetts, USA1906Pre-linenFair-Good

Streetcar rails gleam down the center of a bustling Essex Street in Lawrence, Massachusetts, as pedestrians in Edwardian dress crowd the sidewalks beneath a pale blue sky — brick commercial blocks three and four stories tall line both sides, their awnings shading storefronts, telegraph wires crisscrossing overhead in the visual texture of a thriving immigrant mill city at its industrial peak. Lawrence in 1906 was one of America's great textile manufacturing centers, its workforce drawn from dozens of nations; this view of Essex Street captures the commercial confidence of those years, six years before the famous Bread and Roses Strike of 1912 would put the city on the front page of every newspaper in the country. Written right on the front margin of the card (the message side being limited in the UDB era), a sender thanks "Dear Mrs. Benn" warmly for a pleasant visit while staying at Lawrence, and bids her come back. The card was mailed from Lawrence on August 20, 1906, and received at Houlton, Maine — addressed to Mrs. Morris Benn, RFD #6.
