Antique & Vintage Postcards

Stepping through a thousand years of English history, this sepia real-photo–style card from Frith's celebrated series peers through a massive Saxon stone arch into the interior of Odda's Chapel at Deerhurst, Gloucestershire — one of the most remarkably intact Anglo-Saxon ecclesiastical structures in England, dating to 1056 AD and only rediscovered as a chapel in 1865 when a Latin dedicatory inscription (visible on the wall at right) was deciphered. The brick-tiled floor, rough plastered walls, and heavy timber ceiling beam visible through the arch convey the raw antiquity of this pre-Norman Conquest space with documentary precision. Published by R. A. Newman, Printer & Stationer of Tewkesbury, using Francis Frith & Co.'s photographic archive — a hallmark of Edwardian topographical publishing — this unused card is a collector's piece for both British local history and postcard history enthusiasts.
