Postcard Brookgreen Gardens SC Hancock Beach Ovals Sculpture RPPC Style Unused

Murrells Inlet (Brookgreen Gardens), South Carolina, USA1945RPPCFair-Good

Dappled sunlight filters through Spanish-moss-draped live oaks onto the manicured hedgerows of Brookgreen Gardens in South Carolina's Lowcountry, where a small figural sculpture of a child astride a leaping animal rests on a rusticated stone plinth — an intimate glimpse into one of America's most beloved outdoor sculpture gardens, founded in 1931 by Archer and Anna on the grounds of a former rice plantation. This oversize real-photo-style postcard (larger than standard, with matte photographic surface) documents the "Hancock and Beach Ovals," two of the garden's formal garden rooms, in the early decades of the garden's existence. The reverse, labeled by the garden itself, is entirely unused — no stamp, no address — suggesting it was a souvenir card sold at the garden's own shop. The sculptural focal point in the right foreground appears to be a garden ornament in the tradition of the figurative American sculptors Brookgreen championed.
