Postcard Linen 1935 Greetings Chippewa Lake Ohio Cows Stream Girls Club

Chippewa Lake, Ohio, USA1935LinenFair-Good

Pastoral and unhurried, this linen-era greeting card from Chippewa Lake, Ohio shows a herd of brown-and-white cows wading in a rocky stream shaded by arching hardwood trees — a bucolic scene that makes a charming and somewhat unlikely ambassador for what was actually a lively resort and amusement park destination in Medina County. Postmarked July 25, 1935, the card was mailed with a 1¢ green Franklin stamp and carries a wonderfully warm message from a sender named Nina to her aunt: "Dear Auntie! — Am chaperoning Nini's Club of Girls here for 2 weeks. It is sun[ny] quick here. Nothing to do but eat & sleep & it is hot. Will write later. Nina Love." The recipient — Mrs. Stringer at 601 14th St., Port Huron, Michigan — appears to be the same recipient as the 1937 Cedar Point card in this batch, suggesting a connected family collection spanning multiple Ohio summer vacations. Chippewa Lake Amusement Park operated from 1878 until 1978, when it closed and famously fell into a haunting state of decay.
