Postcard 1945 Linen Ye Olde Market House Fayetteville NC WWII Era Used

Fayetteville, North Carolina, USA1945LinenGood

On a January day in 1945 — with the war in Europe finally nearing its end — someone named Roy was spending a few days in Fayetteville, North Carolina, sending word to a Mrs. Stringer in Port Huron, Michigan, praising the "beautiful and warm" winter weather and promising to write again in "a couple of weeks." The postcard he chose depicts the beloved Ye Olde Market House at the heart of Fayetteville's downtown, the elegant 1832 Federal-style structure with its open arches and clock tower standing proudly beside the tall Citizens Bank & Trust building, bathed in the warm amber glow of a linen-era sunset palette. The Market House occupies one of American history's most freighted sites: it was here that North Carolina ratified the U.S. Constitution in 1789, and where, in darker chapters, enslaved people were once sold. Photographed by the local Turlington Photo Shop and published by the Carolina News Co., this wartime card is a vivid civilian snapshot of a city transformed by nearby Fort Bragg.
