Antique & Vintage Postcards

A pair of yellow streetcars glide down the broad sun-drenched sweep of Pennsylvania Avenue toward the U.S. Capitol in this richly hand-colored white-border postcard from around 1914, the grand boulevard flanked by horse-drawn vehicles and early automobiles, the massive Romanesque Revival Old Post Office Pavilion (completed 1899) towering on the right and the Hotel Raleigh visible at left — a snapshot of Washington at the height of the City Beautiful era. Mailed with a 2-cent Washington stamp and postmarked at the Military Branch post office, the card carries a lively message from someone named Bertie, who had just arrived and was already planning a side trip to Philadelphia on business before heading to "East Orange for a short visit," promising to "try & see you before we sail" — a tantalizing hint of an imminent ocean voyage. The card was addressed to a Miss Olive Thompson in Mifflinburg, Pennsylvania, and published by W.B. Garrison of Washington, D.C.
