Antique & Vintage Postcards

Sunbathers sprawl on emerald lawns, lawn chairs dot the lakeside terrace, and the broad silver expanse of Lake Couchiching stretches to a wooded horizon — this chrome-era postcard from the "Fern" Cottage Resort (Rumble's Inn) at Atherley, Ontario, captures the golden age of Canadian summer resort culture with wonderful specificity. Bert and Gwen, the proprietors, sent this card personally to Mr. & Mrs. Murphy at their Snyder, New York address after the couple's visit, writing warmly that they "certainly enjoyed having you with us at Fern Resort" and hoping to see them again — a lovely example of mid-century hospitality marketing via postcard. The resort, located on Lake Couchiching near Orillia, advertised 200-guest capacity, a private shore golf course, orchestra, supervised children's playground with a climbing Tree House, and stage shows. The card bears a 4-cent Canadian Queen Elizabeth II stamp (Wilding portrait issue) and a crisp Orillia, Ontario machine postmark dated July 21, 1962.
