Postcard 1905 Tunis Tunisia Rue et Minaret Street Scene Hömmler Jonas Dresden

Tunis, Tunisia1905Pre-linenGood

Warm ochre light bathes a narrow medina lane in Tunis as robed figures move beneath a soaring Moorish minaret — this richly chromolithographed postcard, painted by artist R. Lecomte and published in Dresden by Hömmler & Jonas, captures French colonial Tunisia at its most picturesque around 1900–1910. The street is alive with color: striped fabric hangings, crimson doorways, and the brilliant blue North African sky frame the square-tiered minaret with its ornate balcony. The card is labeled Rue et Minaret (Street and Minaret) at lower left and bears the artist's name lower right. The verso, printed in eight languages including Russian (Открытое письмо) and Hungarian (Levelező Lap), reflects the Universal Postal Union era's ambition, with the notation importé d'Allemagne (imported from Germany) confirming the Dresden origin. Published as Series T.O.8, this is a fine example of Orientalist postcard art produced for the European mass market.
