Postcard 1910 Japan Woman Playing Shamisen Kimono Brooklyn Postmark Germany

Brooklyn, New York, USA (sent from); Cleveland, Ohio, USA (addressed to)1910Pre-linenGood

Lizzie dashed off a quick note to her friend Nellie on August 29, 1910, after an evening stroll through Chinatown — "Went through Chinatown Saturday night, sights to be seen" — and chose this glittering hand-colored postcard of a Japanese woman in a deep crimson kimono playing a shamisen as her canvas. The subject kneels gracefully on a tatami-style floor, a sleeping cat curled beside an ink-writing box at her feet, a stone lantern and garden pond visible through the open shoji behind her. The rich gilt-flecked printing, card number 6141, and "Made in Germany" verso mark this as a high-quality chromolithograph produced for the American market at the height of Japonisme's popularity. Postmarked Brooklyn, NY on August 28, 1910 through Station J, the card bears a 1-cent Franklin green stamp and was addressed to Miss N. Gorman, care of Mrs. J.N. Chandler, Euclid Heights, Cleveland, Ohio.
