Antique & Vintage Postcards

Spring has barely touched the elm trees ringing Lynn's City Hall Square when this hand-colored card was made — the branches show the first flush of yellow-green leaf, casting dappled light over the neoclassical Public Library and the dramatic Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument that dominates the foreground, its bronze allegorical figure raised high on a white granite plinth in honor of Lynn's Civil War dead. Lynn, Massachusetts was one of the great industrial cities of New England at the turn of the century, famous for shoe manufacturing, and its civic architecture reflected that prosperity. The back of this card carries a penciled inscription reading "From Uncle Lee" in a looping cursive hand — a small, human thread connecting an unknown uncle to a child or niece or nephew, perhaps sent as a local keepsake during a visit. The undivided-style stamp box noting "Domestic One Cent / Foreign Two Cents" is consistent with the 1901–1907 postcard era.
