Postcard 1911 Buffalo Bison Yellowstone W.S. Berry Gardiner MT Used Linen

Yellowstone National Park / Miles City, MT, USA1911Pre-linenFair-Good

A massive bull bison dominates the foreground of this early hand-colored photographic postcard, his shaggy dark coat and curved ivory horn set against the pale mineral terraces and snow-dusted ridgelines of what appears to be the Mammoth Hot Springs area of Yellowstone National Park — a landscape as prehistoric as the animal himself. Photographed and published by W.S. Berry of Gardiner, Montana (card no. 37 in his series), this 1906-copyright image was printed in Germany in the vibrant chromolithographic style fashionable in the early 1900s. Mailed from Miles City, Montana on June 5, 1911, the card is addressed to Mr. & Mrs. H.J. Carroll at 3149 E. 71st Street, Cleveland, Ohio. The writer — appearing to sign as "James" — fills the left message panel with cursive script referencing the beauty of the area and mentions "Alice" and "Madame" in what reads as a personal travel note. A 2-cent Washington carmine stamp (Scott #319 or similar) cancels cleanly through the Miles City, Mont. machine cancel.
