Antique & Vintage Postcards

The Cochran House stands four proud stories over Newton, New Jersey's main street corner, its Italianate cornice bristling with ornamental finials, its wrap-around balconies inviting guests to watch the small-town commerce below, and the name "R. H. Snook" emblazoned on the parapet—the proprietor staking his identity on the skyline with Victorian confidence. This hand-colored prelinen card, published by J. Hammerstein Music Co. and postmarked Middletown, NY on November 1, 1911, carried a brief, friendly message from a traveler who had arrived in Middletown "yesterday afternoon about as usual" and signed off with a warm inquiry to the family—addressed to Miss Hannah in Warwick, Orange County, New York. The Cochran House was one of Sussex County's prominent commercial hotels, and cards depicting Newton NJ street-level storefronts and hotels from this era are increasingly sought by New Jersey collectors.
