Postcard Grand Hotell Bodø Norway 1960s Chrome Corner View Norwegian Flag

Bodø, Norway1968ChromeGood

A vivid splash of fire-engine red rises against the arctic-blue sky of Bodø, Norway — the Grand Hotell commands its downtown corner with the confident geometry of postwar Scandinavian modernism, its Norwegian flag snapping proudly from a low wing and its illuminated "Grand Hotell" sign catching the summer sun. Bodø, a city above the Arctic Circle rebuilt almost entirely from rubble after the Luftwaffe's devastating 1940 bombing campaign, was still very much reinventing itself when this chrome-era card was printed; the hotel's clean rectangular massing and pale stone plinth speak directly to that mid-century reconstruction spirit. Pedestrians in early-1970s dress — a woman with a pram, a suited man, a child on a tricycle — animate the intersection, giving human scale to what was then one of the city's premier accommodations. The card was printed by Mittet, Norway's dominant postcard publisher throughout the twentieth century, catalog number 1890/28.
